You don’t need to install anything in Mac OS X. All you need to do is click File > Print on your application and there is a PDF button on the bottom of the Print dialog. I’ll give you an example if you want to convert a document that you open in Microsoft Word for Mac into PDF File.

1. Click File > Print

2. Click PDF Button at the bottom of Print Dialog, then choose Save as PDF.

3. Name your File and Click Save.

4. It’s Done

It’s very easy, right? For another application, it’s exactly the same. Just click on File > Print and follow the above procedure.

How to Convert Office Document, HTML File into PDF File in Windows

If you are using Windows as your Operating System, you need to install a software to convert file into PDF. The software i have been using for my Windows is CutePDF Writer. This is free simple software to give PDF converter functionality just like Mac OS X.

1. First you can download the CutePDF Writer from this link.
2. Install the software

Uncheck Install the Ask Toolbar and make Ask my default search provider and Make Ask.com my browser home page and news tabs page. Click Next and then click Install.

Then there will be a Dialog like below

Click Yes and The installation will be running.

Note :
If you found an error during the installation, make sure your Firewall is turned off before the installation.

3. After the installation is done. You can convert all kind of documents into PDF file just by using File > Print (exactly the same like Mac OS X).

4. Choose CutePDF Writer from Printer Name and click Ok.
 

5. Name your File and Click Save.

Today is sunday. So, i am relaxing myself today. I done several things in my Mac OS X, i remove all unused application on my Dock, i change my wallpaper background, i arrange bookmarks in my Firefox and i open and check my Address Book. When i check my Address Book, it is completely a mess. Couple months ago, i synced my Address Book with Yahoo. I found a lot of name that are not standard. I have tried this software and the result is awesome. My Address Book filled with my Facebook friend data contact and all the name is standard. The amazing things is it also synchronize my friends profile pictures with Address Book. Unfortunately, it can synchronize phone numbers and email address as Facebook does not allow this by their Terms of Service.

How to use the application is very easy. You just have to login into your Facebook account via the AddressBookSync and then the application will automatically import the Facebook Friend data into your Address Book. The software will automatically separate if there is existing contact in your Address Book. You can manually choose which data you want to insert to Address Book.

Couple days ago, Google officially launched their new software, Google Drive. Today i has already tested this Google software. Google Drive is service that make it as home of all your files beside your computer hard drive. Google Drive can store up to 5 Gb (5120 MB). You can upgrade storage if you feel not enough with the existing storage. With Google Drive, you can access your files anywhere as long there is internet connection and Google Account. Google Drive is available for PC, Mac and Android devices. iPhone and Ipad version still in development and be launched soon.

What we can do with this Google Drive?

1. Create documents, spreadsheets and presentations online
   If you already familiar with Google Docs, Google Drive will replace Google Docs functionality. You can create documents, spreadsheets and presentations files and store them on Google Server. The difference is Google Drive have a very large space of hard drive. So you can create as much as document as you want.
   
   
2. Files Sharing
   If you want to share files, applications, pictures, videos, you don’t need to have your own hosting or send them through email. You can store all your files in Google Drive and share them to your friends.
   

Install Google Drive Applications

I already installed Google Drive Application for Mac. With this application, you can view your files that was stored in Google server offline. You can also sync the files so you can easily copy the files you want to share in Google Drive through your Finder (Windows Explorer in Windows).

One of many reason why i use Macbook as my primary laptop is because the superior security from its Operating System, Mac OS X. Using Mac OS X means no virus, no trojan and no malware. But couple years ago, since the first virus found, Mac OS X is no longer invulnerable as we know it for couple of years. And today, it was turn out that Mac OS X is not as safe as before. According to report from Dr. Web (one of Russian antivirus company), there are more than half million Apple Mac computers have been infected by Trojan called “Flashback” or sometimes called as “BackDoor.Flashback.39“.

According to Dr. Web report, about 600,000 Mac computers have been installed by that malware and make them to be one of “botnet”. Most of the infected Mac computers reside in United States, Canada and United Kingdom. There has been no official statement from Apple regarding this issue. But Apple has released a security update to prevent this. I personally has update my Java using the last update Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 7 just now. It should fixed the security hole.

Flashback Malware itself was first detected in September 2011. Flashback Trojan disguised in Adobe Flash Player installer. After the trojan is installed, it will disable some network security and then install dyld library that will inject code in running applications. Flashback can grab your valuable information like password and important data through web browser or other applications.

As quoted from the BBC, the latest version of malware is exploiting the java programming language that allows the malicious code is installed without the consent of the user. The developer of Java programming language, Oracle, has repaired this security hole on February 14, but it seems does not work on Apple Macintosh machines.

How to Check Flashback on Mac OS X

For you who didn’t install anything on your Mac OS X lately, it should be fine. But if you want to make sure, is your computer has been hit by Flashback Trojan or not, here are several steps about how to check Flashback on your Mac OS X.

• Launch Terminal and enter the following commands:Safari Users :
  

  defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

  Firefox Users :

  defaults read /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

• If you see a message like “The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist” proceed to the next defaults write command:
  

  defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

• If you see a message “The domain/default pair of (/Users/joe/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist” then your Mac OS X is not infected.

How to remove Flashback from Mac OS X

There are several step by step guide about how to remove Flashback from your system. There are two guide you can use, which are Topher Kessler’s article on CNET and F-Secure’s Thread. After you succeed remove the trojan, i recommend you to update your Java with the last update from Software Update.

One of weakness from Parallel Desktop compared to the other multi operating system software in Mac (VMWare, Bootcamp, etc) is the lack of driver support. I experienced this discomfort when i am studying chinese in Tianjin, China. Because i must use Windows to connect the internet in Tianjin, so i must use a lot of internet software for Windows too. When i use Skype to make a phone call to my mother, i just found out that the video webcam doesn’t work. I only can speak to my mom but can’t see the video. To fix this, i already googled several website and finally find the solution.

Below are step by step to fix this problem :
1. Open Your Parallel Desktop. Run the Windows until you enter the Windows Desktop.
2. Click Devices>USB>Apple Built-in iSight from the menu

3. Then your Windows will recognize a new device, but it will fail to installed correctly.
4. Download the Apple Built-in iSight for Windows Driver here.
5. After that enter your Control Panel and choose Hardware and Sound. Then click Device Manager. You will see there is uninstalled item in Other Devices.

6. Right click on that item and click Update Driver Software
7. Choose Browse my computer for driver software

8. Select the driver where you save the downloaded file.
9. Follow the instruction until the installation finished.
10. Your video webcam in Windows is ready to use

Note : If you want to use the video webcam in Mac again, you can click again in the menu Devices>USB>Apple Built-in iSight

Setting Video Webcam for Skype

For you who want to use Skype, don’t forget to change the setting like below :

1. Open Skype in your Windows.
2. Click Tools>Options

3. Click Video Setting. And choose Apple Built-in iSight in select webcam.

4. Your Webcam is ready to use in Skype

During my stay in China, one of the most frustated thing beside the lack of vegetarian food is about blocked internet website here. Some general websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, Youtube could not be accessed at all here. This of course makes me a little frustrated. Moreover, some websites are one source of my income, examples: Bloggers & Youtube. That’s why on early days here, i use my time to find a way to get through Chinese Government’s firewall (Great Wall). During 4 days of searching, I found that there are several ways to access blocked websites in China.

There are several types of solutions for this problem. You just need to pick one from below.

1. Using Paid Web Based Proxy sites

In networks, a proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. One of the best proxy sites i tried is Securitales (http://www.securitales.com)
It requires no installation and works great from China. You can try it using trial mode about 10 minutes. To use this service you must pay some amount of fee :

2. Using VPN

By using a VPN, you would like to access the internet from another IP (usually from another country). Suppose you use the Internet in China, then you would like to access it from outside China. In this way, then you will not get blocked by certain country’s firewall system (ex : Chinese Great Wall). One pretty good vpn service I found was http://www.vpnatchina.com. Unfortunately, to use this you must pay monthly fee. For you who don’t want to pay at all, there 2 software i recommended. They are Freegate and Hotspot Shield. Both are softwares for Windows (unfortunately there are no Mac version for both software). Currently i am using Freegate to access Facebook, Blogger, etc. Using VPN is a good solution to the surf at the web. You can search them on the internet. Some software also support you to request open port that had been blocked by your internet service provider ( ISP ), and its stable to all your connection to surf at the world.

3. Using Free Proxy Website

This is the common solution for this problem. There are tons of free proxies websites out there, but most of them doesn’t last for long time. I don’t recommend you to use free proxy, because most of these website are run by hackers and governments. They are easily to block and it’s very unstable.

One of reason why i love Mac OS X so much is because there is Adium as my primary messenger software. Adium Messenger support multiple account including MSN, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, AOL Messenger, ICQ, QQ, Facebook, Twitter, etc. So what you need to do is just open Adium, and your messenger account are all online. Only Skype account doesn’t supported by Adium. One of advantage of Adium Messenger compared to many messenger software is it is very customizable. You can change your Dock Icons, Contact List Styles, Emoticons. Sound, Message Styles, Status Icon and Menu Bar Icons. One week ago, i tried to built my own emoticon to chat with my girlfriend that using Adium too. So in this post, i tried to share about how to create custom emoticon in Adium Messenger.

I will explain you step by step :

1. Download this file and extract it on your Computer

2. Right Click on the CustomEmoticon.AdiumEmoticonset and click Show Package Contents.

3. You can copy all emoticon image file in this folder. The recommended file format is PNG or GIF. I usually use 50×50 pixel dimesion for the image file.

4. If you already copied all the image files, all you have to do is just edit the Emoticons.plist file in the folder. All you have to do is change the script after

I used Mac as my primary OS. But i still can’t get away at all from MS Windows. Don’t get me wrong, i really love Mac OS X Leopard. But i still can’t say goodbye to Windows. So i still use Parallel Desktop to run Windows on my Leopard. Why? Because there are some software only supported on Windows and i couldn’t find its replacement on Mac. Besides Metatrader 4 which is used for forex trading (there is no mac version for MT4 platform until today), Windows Live Writer is one of them. I’ve tried Blogging Tools on Mac like Marsedit & Ecto , but i still prefer Windows Live Writer for my blogging writer tools. The good part of this software is it’s free !!!

Tips to fix error when adding account on WLW for WordPress User

Just another note for you who using WordPress Platform. When adding WP account on WLW, you’ll encounter this error.

“An error occured while attempting to connect to your blog: Blog Server Error – Server Error 405 Ocurred XML-RPC services are disabled on this blog. An admin user can enable them at……/wp-admin/options-writing.php. You must correct this error before proceeding.”

I googled about this error and found the answer. Thanks for EE for this post which gave me info I’m going to share below. Here how to fix this error.

1. Log in to your wordpress admin
2. Go to “Settings”
3. Click “Writing”
4. Find the XML-RPC option as shown below.
5. Tick the little box
6. “Save Changes”

Try to add account on WLW again, and there shouldn’t be a problem anymore.
